Design of narrow long kitchens: features, photos

It is no secret that in the houses with the old layout of the room they do not always have a square shape, often the rooms have an elongated shape and are not very comfortable, especially when it comes to the device in this space of the kitchen area.

The design of a narrow long kitchen has its own characteristics, but if they are taken into account, even a not quite suitable room can be quite functional and look stylish and cozy. If redevelopment is not possible, design techniques should be used.

Style

The interior of the narrow kitchen is best done in a modern style, using simple silhouettes. The fancy lines of the Empire or Baroque are irrelevant here. The abundance of decorative elements is also contraindicated - they will draw attention to the wrong shape. The minimalism and hi-tech styles are considered to be the most suitable for elongated spaces, Scandinavian and loft styles are slightly less suitable.

Location

In one line

This arrangement is usually used in the design of the interiors of a long kitchen in small rooms. The work surface and wall cabinets are placed along the long wall, but not occupying the wall completely. In the remaining gap, there is a dining or relaxation area with the possibility of eating.

Corner

In very small kitchens to place the work surface and wall cabinets can be in one of the corners - this frees up part of the room for the dining table. This decision is made on the basis of the geometry of the room - the presence of windows, doors and their relative placement.

In two lines

The design of a narrow long kitchen can be made “in two lines” - the work surface and the stove are located on both sides of the entrance, parallel to each other, and the free part of the room near the window remains for the dining group. This is an excellent option if the door is located in one of the “short” walls, and the window is in the other.

Usually, equipment on one side of the entrance (refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, and storage cabinets), and on the other, a work surface, above which you can place wall cabinets.

Colour

In the interior of a narrow long kitchen it is necessary to use only those colors that help visually expand the room. “Cold” tones meet this condition: blue, silver, mint, white. In these colors can be painted and walls, and furniture.

Too bright colors and sharp contrasts are undesirable, they will distort the already imperfect proportions of the kitchen. The ideal option is the use of white, supplemented with cool blue or gray tones, which looks particularly impressive in the Scandinavian style.

Space

The interior of a long kitchen should not be heavy, bulky. It is possible to ease his perception by leaving the upper part of the walls free, or, if this is not possible, by closing the cabinets in this area with glass doors. It is even better if inside such cabinets there is a backlight that gives the impression of light coming from the windows.

Habitual cabinets can be replaced with light shelves, perhaps even open ones - the kitchen will immediately seem more spacious and wide.

Shine

For comfortable work in the kitchen you need good additional lighting. In the design of a narrow long kitchen it is necessary to provide not only a thorough illumination of the working area, but also a sufficient amount of light in the part that is removed from the window. For this purpose, suitable ceiling lights, which can be arranged in lines perpendicular to the long walls, or groups.

It is better to refuse the central chandelier, it can be replaced with suspensions (at least two) in the dining area and the kitchen area itself.

Width

Use glossy surfaces in the interior of a narrow kitchen. It can be furniture fronts from MDF, glass apron, metal surfaces. Glossy shine, reflecting light, facilitates the perception of space, it seems more spacious.

Volume

It is quite difficult to change the volume of a room, but you can change its perception by simple means. For example, use photowall-paper with the image of fields, roads, city blocks moving away into the distance. Any pictures with a deep perspective, suitable for creating a feeling of spaciousness in the interior of a long kitchen.

When repairing or upgrading a kitchen, try using the following methods to visually expand a room that is too narrow.

Ways to visually expand the narrow space

  • Laying flooring with a pattern in a diagonal direction.
  • Lack of protruding parts in the furniture (for example, recessed cabinet handles or facades with the opening mechanism by pressing).
  • Furniture made of transparent materials: chairs and tables made of glass or plastic.
  • Use in finishing mosaic tiles of the same color, both on the floor and on the walls.
  • Mirrors on the facades of cabinets and as independent elements of decor.
  • Patterns on the part of the walls, changing the geometry of space.
