Decorative ceilings: types and methods of decoration

Although simplicity is considered the highest level of beauty, sometimes we want to add to the interior spectacular and picturesque nuances. Decorative ceilings - one of the ways to make your home uncommon and delightful. The main thing is to choose a coating that will harmoniously fit into the interior, emphasize its strengths and hide imperfections.

What should be considered when making the ceiling?

Each interior is individual. Anyone has its own characteristics - the pros and cons, which must be considered when choosing a ceiling. To determine the coating, you need to evaluate the following nuances:

  • room size - its area and height. In the spacious halls with high ceilings, stacked suspended structures, stucco moldings, wooden or drywall beams will look beneficial. There is enough space and bulky decor will not break the harmony. It will only bring the surface closer, fill the void and add comfort. Low ceilings and small areas do not accept excessive decoration. In such rooms it is worth confining to laconic forms, smooth and even surfaces;
  • style decision - the ceiling should not stand out from the general style. Gypsum sockets, moldings and cornices with a patina will look pretty strange in high-tech, and metal mesh and concrete base with open wiring in the classics;
  • room functional - depending on it, the complexity of the design is determined and certain materials are selected;
  • lighting system - if there is enough light from the main chandelier and wall fixtures, then the ceiling can be simply painted, pasted over with wallpaper or tiles. But if you need to install additional ceiling lights, without suspended compositions of drywall, caissons or tension cloths can not do. Otherwise, embed devices and hide the wires will not work;
  • coloring - ceilings in small rooms are better decorated in light colors - white, milky, light gray, beige, sky blue, pale green. Such shades will not press and visually move the surface. Dark ones, on the contrary, will create a feeling of “cover” above your head. But this is only true for matte surfaces.

When making the ceiling glossy canvas, this effect disappears. Thanks to the reflective properties of gloss, coatings seem deep and distant.

Traditional, modern and unusual ways to design the ceiling

The variety of options for the design of the ceiling is fascinating. All of them, starting with traditional whitewash in the past and ending with the installation of cloths with 3D printing, are more or less in demand today.

Whitewashing and painting

If you prefer a simple and eco-friendly finish, just lime the ceiling. To find out which material was used the previous time, rub the surface with your palm. Mel will leave a clear mark, but the lime will not be erased. To do the job you will need only the usual roller or brush and diluted lime. Irregularities better putty. After drying the "patches" you can start whitewashing.

To prevent the ceiling from turning yellow when exposed to sunlight, you can add blue in the lime.

A similar finish is painting with aqueous emulsion acrylic paints. The advantage of this material is that it:

  • it is presented by a wide palette of shades - thanks to pigments it is possible to create any tone;
  • in the product line there are options with different levels of moisture resistance;
  • various textures of the material allow you to choose "your" paint for any interior solutions.

Acrylic can be matte, glossy and semi-gloss.
To carry out the work, it is necessary to prepare the ceiling - to seal up the gaps with tape for reinforcement, to hide the flaws with the help of putty or to plaster the surface. In addition to the light shades to which we are all accustomed, you can use dark ones - preferably glossy ones, as well as bright colors. The active ceiling is a bright accent in the room. Therefore, the rest of the furnishings and furniture is desirable to withstand in bright colors. A bright spot in the middle of the composition should be supported with accessories or textiles, the main thing is to remember about the sense of proportion. The painted ceiling can be painted with decorative patterns, both as a whole and in a fragmentary way - by defining with it the boundaries of a particular zone. The original "carpet" can be easily created by hand. For those who do not have the skill of drawing, there are luxury stencils. Using them in conjunction with a sponge or sprayer, you can get images of excellent quality.

Decorative plaster

Various irregularities, roughness disappear from the ceiling due to decorative plaster. It reliably hides defects under its texture. The material is prepared by diluting dry building mixes. The composition includes cellulose glue, fibers and additives that give decorativeness - mother of pearl, silk thread, marble particles. With plaster, you can create a seamless resistant coating. Due to the material's strength, applying a mixture with a spatula to the ceiling is not so difficult. Venetian plaster is a traditional element of classic interiors, but it can be relevant in any design.

Beams and false beams

Beams - a characteristic feature of such styles as country, Provence, loft. They are wood or polyurethane foam bars. The latter are designed to facilitate the design, to prevent its damage by mold and fungus. The beams visually raise the ceiling, serve for zoning and correcting the shape of the room. If you arrange them parallel to the short wall, the outlines of the room will approach the square. Beams act as bearing elements of the ceiling, perform a decorative function. The bar can have a rectangular u-shaped section. The advantages of false beams are obvious. It is lightweight, easy-to-install material, with a rich palette of shades and a variety of shapes.
They enable:

  • hide wiring;
  • embed fixtures;
  • conduct ventilation ducts;
  • hide the water pipes.

Solid wood beams also have their advantages. They look expensive and noble, withstand heavy loads, so they can be mounted on a hanging chair or swing for children. The beams are decorated with carvings, painted in different colors, decorated with painting.

Fabric and its main types

Fabrics for stretch ceilings are manufactured using a special technology. Polyester impregnated with polyurethane is used as the basis for the fabric. This material is much stronger than the usual PVC coatings, resistant to low temperatures. It has a rough matte surface, it looks expensive and presentable. The width is 5 m, which allows you to create a seamless coating in spacious rooms. Fabric ceilings have good hygroscopicity, which prevents the appearance of fungal formations. Safe canvases can be safely used in children's rooms. The material is odorless. Installation of fabric ceilings is made quickly and easily, and most importantly - without the use of a heat gun. The blades are fixed in two ways - with the help of a profile-clothespin and a semicircular spatula or a spiked system.
The disadvantages of the material are its high cost compared to PVC ceilings, difficulty in maintenance due to the texture surface, inability to retain water and a poor choice of colors. The last problem can be solved by repainting the coating or ordering canvas with photo printing.

Coverings can imitate satin, suede, velvet, leather, calico textures. There are textured options, the basis for which is the grid, and the top layer is made of fabric with a pattern.

Fretwork

Stucco molding is an element of classic interiors. Previously, because of its high cost, only a privileged class could afford it. The emergence of low-cost options of polyurethane and foam made it available for any budget. In the "family" of stucco there is a huge number of elements: moldings, baguettes, corners, ceiling sockets, cornices, friezes, bas-reliefs, columns, semi-columns, arches, garlands, pilasters, balusters, brackets and pedestals. This decorative decision is of practical importance. With it, you can zone the room, hide the joints of materials and surface imperfections.

In small rooms, the material should be used very sparingly and carefully. You should not try to turn them into palace halls - the abundance of stucco decoration "hides" the already modest size.

Stained glass ceiling decoration

Glass with pictures can decorate any room. In the old days, only windows and walls were decorated with stained glass windows, and they “rose” to the ceiling quite recently. Square and rectangular plates are mounted on the edges of the T-shaped profile. Stained glass elements will adequately fit into any interior - depending on the used pattern. Behind them is the backlight, which makes the decorative elements just magical.

The advantages of the material are in its remarkable appearance, variety of design, water resistance and environmental friendliness. The reverse side of the coin is high cost and fragility. But modern glass manufacturing technology allows not to worry about security - triplex or hardened webs can be used in the interiors. To reduce the cost and eliminate the possibility of damage will help plastic counterparts.

There are various techniques for the production of stained glass:

  • photo printing on the film, which is subsequently glued to the glass;
  • drawing a picture of a painted mosaic;
  • jellied - initially drawing is designated by a copper or silver contour, then it is filled with paints.

Painting

The main advantage of painted ceilings in their uniqueness. Images can be chosen to your liking. Heavenly blue, biblical scenes or complex ornate ornament will be the exclusive decoration in a single copy.

For painting ceilings use the following types of paints:

  • oil - equipment allows you to endow the elements of images of different depths, transparency and volume;
  • tempera - sold as dry powders that need to be diluted with water. It dries very quickly and creates interesting effects due to its transparency;
  • acrylic - allow to embody a water-repellent coating. Available in a wide range of colors, the formation of textures with the addition of fillers is possible;
  • luminescent - ornaments made with such paint appear in the dark.

For painting using different techniques:

  • artistic - a complex and time-consuming process, which is better to entrust a professional artist;
  • fresco - paint is applied on wet plaster and penetrates into its deep layers;
  • airbrush - a special device sprays paint with maximum accuracy, facilitates the drawing of the smallest details;
  • stencil painting - does not require mastery of the artist's skill, only patience and accuracy will be needed.

Ceiling decor paper or wallpaper

This ceiling design is not new. Modern materials significantly expand the capabilities of decorators. Paper "pioneers" found worthy competitors in the face of non-woven, vinyl, acrylic, fiberglass, fabric and metal "fellow." Liquid cellulose materials and photo panels with various prints occupy special positions in the wallpaper line. The advantage of decorating the ceiling wallpaper in the relative cheapness of materials, a huge variety of their range and easy installation.

Features of bamboo wallpaper on the ceiling

Bamboo canvases fill the room with natural motifs. They are made from carefully dried and aged at a certain temperature of the stems. Different wallpapers are made from different parts of the stem - the core or bark. This is reflected in their appearance - the first are smoother and lighter, but not sufficiently resistant to moisture and ultraviolet rays. To keep them intact, the material is varnished. The latter have a natural texture and a protective wax coating. The ceilings covered with bamboo wallpaper are distinguished by their environmental friendliness, bactericidal properties, ability for improved sound and heat insulation, durability and resistance to mechanical influences.

Decoupage on the ceiling

Decoupage technique - a simple and inexpensive way to design the ceiling. By applying it, you can "paint" the surface with your own hands. Applications with maximum likelihood imitate art painting. No one will ever guess that a professional artist has not worked on an image.

How to decorate the ceiling with decoupage?

First of all, it is necessary to develop a sketch of the future ceiling and select the appropriate images.
You will need the following materials:

  • motifs cut from napkins or from decoupage paper;
  • acrylic primer;
  • PVA glue;
  • varnish;
  • wide brush.

The surface must be prepared - cleaned from dust and primed with acrylic composition. Next, paste the image fragments using PVA. Glue is applied on the prepared surface with a thin layer, and then a picture is applied on top. The thinnest paper is smoothed with a wide brush to get rid of the inevitable folds. The pressure should be soft, as the material is easily torn. Next, leave the ceiling to dry and eliminate the entry into the room drafts. After drying, cover the surface with several layers of lacquer to protect the decor from moisture and sunlight. Each layer should dry well - it takes at least 12 hours.

Moldings and baguettes

These elements have long ceased to be only part of the classic interiors. Stucco elements will add comfort and aesthetics to a variety of rooms. With the help of moldings, sockets, baguettes, you can create a certain architecture on the ceiling, decorate it. So that they do not seem pretentious, paint them in one color with the ceiling. So they will add elegance and only slightly remind of the classics, but they won't stand out much. When mounting it is necessary to fill the joints in order to create the illusion of solid compositions.

Multi-level and curved ceilings

Tiered plasterboard designs are a great way to create an original and beautiful decor, and at the same time hide electrical cords or pipes. In the middle of the suspension composition, as a rule, they stretch colored PVC cloths or fabric analogues. But you can also revet this space with tiles, photo wallpapers.

Patterns on the ceilings come in the form:

  • geometric shapes;
  • abstract curved and spiral lines;
  • geometric cells with backlight.

You can create floating ceilings, then the lower level will not be adjacent to the base. Such decorations are justified in public rooms with high ceilings or in a private house. The design will bring the ceiling and make the situation more comfortable.

Ordinary drywall is afraid of moisture, so in the bathroom and kitchen it is better to use water resistant varieties of this material, or to completely abandon it.

Tiled flooring

Tiling is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to decorate a ceiling. It is not particularly popular, but sometimes it helps a lot when you need to hide untidy surfaces and wires quickly and without significant investments. For example, in a rented apartment or in the country. In addition to the white elements, colored tiles with various patterns appeared on the market. Therefore, you can easily choose the finishing material that will fit into the decoration of the room. For installation, you do not have to hire specialists - everything can be done independently. Before you glue the tiles, you need to level the base and primed the surface. At the final stage - to glue the plinth. If desired, the ceiling can be painted in any color or decorate the protruding ornament.

Stretch ceiling

Stretch coatings are perfectly smooth surfaces that do not need additional finishing. They do not have to paint or plaster. And if a flood suddenly happens, such a ceiling will save furniture and the rest of the decoration from water. Cloths are mounted on a metal profile by harpoon or bezgarpunny method. After that, the surface is heated with a heat gun and stretched. Further, holes for connecting luminaires are cut in the canvas, and the contour is closed with a baguette.

Variety of textures material

  1. Glossy.
  2. Matte.
  3. Satin.
  4. Translucent.
  5. Fabric
  6. Decorated with photo printing.

Rack, cassette and panel ceilings

All of these coatings are a typesetting canvas, where each element is mounted on a metal or wooden frame. They perfectly hide wiring, irregularities, plate joints.

Types of ceilings:

  • cassette - are rectangular and square plates of steel or aluminum. Thanks to interesting colors - golden, silver, and also mirror versions can be an ornament to the modern interior. Plates are attached to the frame like Armstrong systems;
  • rack - consist of separate metal slats, each of which is mounted on the profile. The mounting method can be open or closed. Finishing is more suitable for office and retail space. В жилых помещениях будет уместна в ванной или в кухне, поскольку не боится воздействия влаги.
  • панельные - панели пластиковые или МДФ - недорогой и практичный вариант отделки для влажных помещений в квартире или на даче. The panels can imitate natural stone or wood - birch, oak, cherry. Mounted on a frame of wooden or metal profile. When installing on flat bases - boards, chipboard or plywood crate is not required.

Choose coverage, consistent with the features of the interior, your own taste and financial capabilities.
