Decorative brick on the wall +75 photo examples

Many people remember the Soviet washable paper wallpaper for the corridor with a brick wall print and green shoots. Many decades have passed since then, but the decorative brick on the wall not only did not lose its relevance, but also smoothly moved into the interiors of living rooms and kitchens, becoming a style-forming element of many modern styles.

Types and features of tiles

Of course, real brick can be found in the interior rarely. Only owners of brick urban new buildings, by agreement with the developer who refused to plaster, and owners of private brick houses, can afford such luxury. In all other cases, the implementation of this bold idea will require imitation decorative finishing material.

Flexible

Flexible brick tile is used for interior decoration quite often. The reason for this is its good decorative qualities and ease of installation. This modern material is made of cement, sand, acrylic polymer and color pigments. On sale you can find a huge variety of color solutions for brick tiles: all shades of brick, white, sand, gray and even black.

This material bends gently at any angle, it is possible to decorate with it external and internal corners, window and door openings, columns and other curvilinear surfaces. To do this, the finishing element is simply warmed up by a building hairdryer to 50 degrees and glued to a curved surface under pressure. Slightly warmed tiles will hide any uneven ground. You can cut it with a simple knife.

Thanks to combinations of different color shades of tiles from one collection, you can achieve a unique wall design. Deviations in shades further emphasize the naturalness of the laying. Due to good performance characteristics (frost resistance, resistance to natural factors), tiles can also be used in exterior finish - for example, to revet a loggia.

The following advantages of flexible modern material can be noted:

  • provides additional heat and sound insulation;
  • due to its light weight, easy to work with;
  • practically wasteless material;
  • warm to the touch;
  • has a certain resistance to mechanical stress;
  • You can lay out on a cheap cement mix or cement glue.

Plaster

Gypsum brick tile is absolutely eco-friendly and allows the surface to breathe, so it is popular in finishing no less flexible. In appearance and manufacturing technology, it is not much different from the cement. Made facing material from gypsum with the addition of plasticizers. It is light in weight, which determines the ease of working with it and a certain breadth of use: for example, it can be mounted on drywall. The plaster tile painted in weight does not lose color at long operation, possesses sound-proof characteristics, high decorative effect and the inexpensive price.

However, some of its technical characteristics significantly reduce the range of its application:

  1. Gypsum tile absorbs moisture from the environment, swells and as a result is painted. Therefore, it is impractical to use it in rooms with high humidity: bathrooms and the kitchen. Either the tile will have to apply a special varnish, which will significantly increase the amount of investments in repairs.
  2. It is a fragile material that can easily crack from mechanical impact. The fragility also somewhat complicates the installation process.
  3. Gypsum tile is an excellent dust collector. The relief surface easily accumulates dust.

Unfortunately, the low temperature resistance and fragility of the tile make it impossible to use it in kitchens near the stoves, for facing fireplaces, as well as for finishing places near heating elements.

Cement

Cement tile has excellent performance and can be used for decorative cladding in rooms that are operated at all temperatures. For example, for wall decoration in seasonal homes. The great advantage of cement tile is its inexpensive price and a variety of colors and textures.

The basis of cement tiles are mineral crumbs and the best brands of Portland cement, containing astringent silicates, sand and water. Injection molding or pressing manufacturing techniques allow you to simulate the surface with any accuracy. Slightly inferior to clinker in mechanical strength, polymer cement tile has less weight, chemical resistance, high variety of color and texture versions. The coloring pigment is introduced into the solution immediately when kneaded, which ensures color stability and fade resistance.

Clinker

Clinker tiles are made from the same slate clay as traditional brick - the differences lie in the manufacturing technology. For the manufacture of clinker clay, high-temperature calcination is applied until the mixture components are completely sintered. The resulting clinker tiles have minimal porosity, excellent strength, excellent thermal insulation, frost-resistant, moisture-proof and decorative characteristics. Therefore, clinker is most often used for cladding facades.

The apartment clinker tiles are an excellent solution not only for rooms, but also for the design of the kitchen and bathroom, as its moisture resistance and resistance to temperature changes determine its durability during operation in difficult conditions.

Brickwork panels

Widely used for interior decoration and wall panels under the brick of PVC, MDF, glass fiber concrete. This material is easy to use, and its protective coating withstands moderate shocks and friction. Bars and restaurants widely use it to create authentic interiors. It is also convenient for home use. The advantages of the panels include:

  1. Duration of operation - up to 15 years without loss of performance.
  2. The ability with minimal time investment to hide the unevenness of the surface or communication system.
  3. Light weight and a small thickness of the material allow it to be used even for finishing plasterboard partitions.
  4. Ease of processing material (cut with a regular knife) and ease of installation.
  5. Resistance to high humidity, mildew, mold.
  6. Diverse design, a large number of colors, a variety of texture, no need for finishing dyeing.

There is a slight drawback for wall panels - they can crack with a significant mechanical effect.

According to the base material, the panels are distinguished by:

  1. Polyvinyl chloride panels are safe lightweight decorative panels that are glued to the surface.
  2. MDF panels are made of wood shavings. Such panels possess high operational parameters: resistance to wear, heat-insulating properties and durability.
  3. Panels made of glass fiber - a modern material, which is a mixture of quartz sand, white cement and reinforcing fiberglass. It is a modern flexible, lightweight, eco-friendly, high frost-resistant, fire-resistant, moisture-proof, soundproof material that does not give in to corrosion and chemical effects. Glass fiber concrete is highly resistant to impact, bending, stretching and compression.

Advantages and disadvantages

When choosing a tile to create interior decorative masonry, you should carefully read the technical characteristics of the finishing material. For example, for a kitchen apron device, you need to choose a moisture-resistant material with a surface that is easy to clean. The use of gypsum tiles for these purposes will create certain difficulties. The same applies to the use of tiles in the bathroom.

The time factor of the installation when choosing a material also plays a big role. It is easier and faster to make brick decor from soft tiles or using wall panels. Work with rigid tiles will take much longer. Due to some complexity of installation in some cases it is better to invite a professional.

An important role is played by the price factor - a plaster or cement tile will become a more budgetary solution to the issue, but clinker will be a rather expensive material.

In general, decorative brick tiles allow you to create a durable beautiful interior in modern and classic styles, it will look original and noble and will last as long as possible.

DIY tiles

Some craftsmen prefer to make tiles for decoration with their own hands, creating their own unique textures. This process is not particularly complicated and does not require the use of high-tech equipment.

Expanded polystyrene

Bricks from foam plastic - an easy option to transform the interior of your home. For the manufacture of bricks is taken fine-grained foam, which is cut to the size of a traditional brick - 25 to 12 cm. In case the walls are perfectly aligned, you can glue the bricks directly on them. If you do not want to engage in the alignment of the walls, you can make a panel-based GCR or plywood.

The bricks are glued to the PVA on a primed wall or foundation with a gap that simulates the natural masonry of 10-15 mm. Cracks and gouges to imitate naturalness are applied with a regular soldering iron or knife (trowel, any sharp object). The base is glued to the wall. After that, you can begin to paint the bricks with acrylic paints. You need to paint in several layers, starting with darker shades and ending with lighter ones. Painting is better to carry out cans.

Stencil Tiles

Imitation under the brick can be done using a stencil of plastic or rubber. To simplify the work, you can purchase a ready-made stencil from a well-known manufacturer of dry plaster and adhesive mixtures Ceresit. The manufacturer offers a whole line of stencils imitating London brickwork, Boston brickwork, etc. The stencil surface repeats the texture of a brick wall.

Works should be carried out on freshly laid plaster. Stencil lightly moistened with water and with pressure applied to the wall. After you remove the stencil, you will immediately see the imprint of a brick wall. Stencil on one flat line move along the wall. Align and correct the imitation of the masonry need hands, not a tool. This creates an imitation of natural texture.

After the mortar dries with a scraper, they make a little clearer the bricks borders. Then brush the garbage with the masonry and start painting.

From plaster and silicone molds

Of course, purchased silicone or polyurethane molds can of course be used to make tiles made of plaster brick; however, their prices can leave anyone confused. However, if the question is about the design of a brick insert of a small area, then you can buy one form, as a rule, for 8 bricks and consistently make the necessary number of bricks.
If you plan to design the entire apartment in a loft style, for example, or, at a minimum, decorating a pair of walls in a brick style, it will be easier to cast several shapes with your own hands and quickly make the necessary number of bricks with their help.

For the manufacture of silicone molds, you need a large shield made of laminated chipboard with sides from an aluminum corner to fit the future shape and decorative bricks. Bricks need to stick on the shield with a slip or exactly depending on what kind of masonry you want to get in the end, observing the flatness of the interlayer seams from 3 mm to 5 mm. Bricks need to glue tightly over the entire surface so that the polyurethane does not flow under them. After that, the entire surface is treated with release agent.

Polyurethane is kneaded in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The best in terms of hardness polyurethane for these purposes - 40 blinders. The first layer of polyurethane is smeared with a brush, and after a couple of minutes, polyurethane can be poured onto the surface. Polyurethane should be dried for 24 hours, after which it can be taken out and put in for another 5 days for it to rest. After that, you can start working with him.

The easiest gypsum mix for making bricks:

  • 6 pieces of gypsum;
  • 1 part of slaked lime;
  • water at the rate of 1 to 0.7;
  • color.

Ideal for having a vibrating table. With it, air bubbles will be removed from the filled solution. If there is no vibrating table, gypsum in each form must be pierced with any pin with the same goals. After 20 minutes, the plaster is set and you can gently pull it out of the mold. To dry the bricks should still day.

The relief of the brickwork with plaster and masking tape

This is perhaps the easiest method of creating imitation brickwork and does not require much investment. For plastering walls, you can use ready-made dry mixtures, mixing in a ratio of 1 to 1 plaster and adhesive cement mixture. For a greater increase in the plasticity of the solution it is necessary to add 1 kg of 5 l to it. detergent faerie.

For building masonry on the wall, masking tape 14 mm wide is better. To simplify work, the wall surface can be pre-drawn with a pencil. The distance between the lines is calculated by the size of the bricks and the dimensions of the interlayer seams. On the lines drawn, the adhesive tape is evenly glued in such a way that the edges of the horizontal stripes extend beyond the wall being decorated, and the vertical stripes are necessarily glued on top of the horizontal ones. To traces of the pencil were not visible on the clutch, the adhesive tape is better to glue over the lines and slightly to the side. The adhesive tape should be tightly smoothed against the wall and checked to make it firmly glued together.

Now the prepared solution is applied to the wall on top of the adhesive tape with a spatula with a layer thickness of 5-6 mm. If you apply a thicker layer, then you have to spend time on additional grouting. If the mixture is pre-calibrated, no staining will be required. On the applied solution, you can walk your hand in a wet rubber glove to create a textured surface.

After the solution has seized, but has not yet hardened completely, you can remove the mesh from the adhesive tape. For the ends of the tape, moving from top to bottom, it is removed along with the plaster applied on it. After the plaster dries out a little more, you can trim the outlines of the bricks with a spatula. Small dents and scratches will only add to the naturalness and naturalness of the masonry.

If further painting is planned, the dried wall will need to be primed. If the tile is already painted in mass, it will be enough to cover it with varnish for decorative coatings.
Style decisions

Decorative brickwork that imitates brickwork not only does not create a large load on the walls, but also allows you to decorate the interior, both in classical (English style, retro), in rustic (country, Provence), and in modern (Scandinavian, loft, industrial) styles. Let's look at some examples.

Loft

The brutal texture of the brick has literally become the hallmark of the modern Loft style. In this interior, it will look to a place in any room - in the living room, in the bedroom, in the kitchen and hallway. As a rule, one wall in the loft is made of brickwork - an accent. Color masonry can match the taste preferences of the owners - light, white, light gray masonry will contribute to the visual expansion of the space, while rich colors - brick, brown and even black are acceptable only in spacious apartments.

Loft goes well with modern furniture and bright colors. Its main partners are metal, wood and glass. To create a stylish interior, you can paint the remaining 3 walls in white. As a representative of the minimalist movement, the loft does not accept small littering decor. Windows in this style can not curtain anything, but on the first floors will look good blinds. Wood floors add to the comfort of the room.

In the kitchen, a kitchen apron made in the technique of brickwork will add a zest to the loft style. However, you can also make a working wall brick to the ceiling.

Country music

Country-style brick as a single background wall will look perfect in the kitchen. Rooms more often make out brick inserts - along the arches, doorways. The main feature of country style is its lightness, ease and simplicity. And it is very important not to break this harmony with a sufficiently heavy brick.

However, if there is a place in the room for a fireplace, then a brick wall beside it will add a highlight to the interior. Small brick inserts will be perfectly combined with a simple small-flowered print on wallpaper and textiles. The main companion of country style is wood. Wooden floors and rough furniture will give a real rustic interior.

Gothic

Gothic - a rather rare, predominantly youth style, decorated in gloomy colors. Naturally, the brickwork for this style will be black. Gothic style is elegant, managing to combine romanticism with deliberate severity. Поэтому соседствовать с грубоватой кирпичной кладкой может и изящная хрустальная люстра в гостиной, и белоснежная кровать в спальне с балдахином.Textiles in Gothic should be heavy, the painting is real, and the furniture is wooden. It is permissible to use forging in design elements.

Minimalism

Minimalism is one of the most trending styles of modern times. Minimum details, decor - more restraint, rigor and brevity. The main color in minimalism is white, however, color accents are allowed. However, it is better to fit into the style of a white brick wall. In a duet with it will look good white wallpaper with a black unobtrusive print and wooden floor.
However, minimalism is also friendly with graphite gray, which can also be decorated with brickwork. Rug-knit carpet, laconic, geometrically adjusted furniture, window blinds - usually this is enough. Act on the principle of better less, yes better.

Types of masonry

Decorative brickwork is achieved by various ways of laying and ligation of bricks, using bricks of different shapes and colors. The easiest and most familiar way to create a decorative wall is direct masonry: due to the thickness of the seam and its color, a smooth, colored, textured surface. Due to these elements, you can create a unique look. What are the most known types of masonry:

  • single row;
  • multi-row;
  • single row by one third;
  • American hedge;
  • English dressing;
  • Old Russian masonry;
  • simple with the sixth row butcher;
  • Flemish spiral and Flemish cross, diagonal;
  • herringbone;
  • network;
  • diagonal single row ligation.

Bavarian masonry is called the technique when stacked bricks of different colors. Classical Bavarian masonry is made of 4 shades of bricks of the same or different texture.

Conclusion

Brickwork is a fashionable trend in the interior, which is literally friendly with all trendy trends. It looks good in industrial and country styles, in outrageous gothic and modest minimalism, in aristocratic classics and in modern faded chebbi chic. Making brickwork at home is easy and does not require large investments. But the effort spent will pay off handsomely and attention to your zest of the guests of the house.
