Decorative putty: types and methods of application

A large range of building materials allows you to get a truly unique design of the room. Decorative plaster is one of the most popular types of decor. Simplicity of care, aesthetic appearance, environmental safety made it a worthy alternative to wallpaper, ceramics, painting or other types of wall decorations. They use the finish not only as a self-sufficient material for decorating walls, but also as a textural basis for painting.

Types of spackling mixtures

You can decorate the surface in different ways. For example, using ordinary plaster, you can align the wall to a perfectly smooth state. Adding special compositions allows you to achieve a relief effect, to obtain a glossy surface or to imitate various natural materials: ornamental stone, fabric, skin of exotic animals, concrete surface, modeling, depending on the chosen style of decoration.

Depending on the binder used, there are such types of plasters.

Acrylic

The binder is an acrylic resin - polymer high-molecular compound. Due to the polymer component, the applied layer is very elastic. The presence of mineral and organic pigments provides various tint variations. Acrylic putties are sold in the form of ready-to-use mixtures. The disadvantage of acrylic is that the decorated surface does not “breathe”, the vapor permeability of the material is extremely low. In addition, the surface is sensitive to sunlight; over time, it begins to crack. Special pigment pastes help to paint surfaces in different colors.

Mineral

In mineral mixtures, cement is a binder. Such mixtures are sold in a dry form, they are diluted with water. Mineral compounds are best suited for outdoor work and decoration of wet areas (for example, bathrooms). This is an environmentally friendly option, resistant to ultraviolet radiation. Over time, the coating becomes only stronger. But he also has a drawback: plaster is unstable to mechanical stress. For cleaning it is undesirable to use devices that supply detergent composition under pressure. The standard tint gamma is light.

Silicate

Here, liquid glass (a mixture of quartz sand, potassium hydroxide and alkali carbonate) is used as a binding element. The surface turns out very strong, unattractive for a fungus and a mold, and also with water-repellent effect. The finished mixture simultaneously has astringent, impregnating and adhesive properties. Fire resistance and vapor permeability are also at altitude. Sold such a coating in the form of the finished composition of different colors. This is the most reliable option listed, with a lifetime of half a century or more. Silicate formulations are used in the design of facades of houses in a humid climate.

According to the type of filler, there are 3 types of putties:

  • Venetian.
  • Textured.
  • Structural.

The last two types of putty form a surface with a relief. As for the Venetian plasters, they are perfectly smooth. All listed types of decorative materials for walls are made of reliable, durable and environmentally friendly components.

Textured

This putty has a coarse structure. Flax fiber, mica, wood, mineral (granite, marble) chips, small pebbles are used as a filler. A scope - decorative registration of plaster, wooden, concrete surfaces, and also a brick. The decor is equally well suited for indoor and outdoor use. Large particles can hide surface irregularities. For drawing there is no need for preliminary preparation of walls. The preparatory work consists in drying, removing the peeling coating, as well as applying the adhesive composition, for better adhesion of the coating to the wall.

The textures can be different: imitation of leather, textiles, wood or natural stone. This is the most diverse type of decorative putty. Its important advantage is low cost. Stucco is sold as already prepared or as a dry mix. It is undesirable to putty when working outside in the rain or when the air temperature is less than 7 degrees. One of the main advantages is the ease of application. Even with an independent design of the walls, a huge number of options are possible.

There are such subspecies of textured surfaces:

  1. Lamb - fine-grained texture of putty solution from stone grains.
  2. Fur coat - a mixture based on cement. The surface is rough, with the effect of hairiness.
  3. Bark beetle The surface resembles wood damaged by a pest of the same name and has a peculiar grooved texture. Looks great with rattan or wood furniture.

Structural

This is a thin layer material based on acrylic or silicate composition. The structure-forming substance is quartz or marble chips. It is applied to internal and front works. Depending on the structure-forming components, the surface can be ideally flat or medium-grained. Structural mixtures are excellent for decorating plasterboard partitions in the interior, as well as for most of the mineral surfaces. This material cannot be used for outdoor work and in wet areas. There are various ways of applying decoration: using a spatula, roller or spray.

Venetian

This is a multi-layered interior coating with the addition of hydrated lime and small marble chips. This is one of the oldest types of finishes, which was widely used in ancient Rome. Waste from the processing of marble was put into action. It was a mirror-smooth, unusually beautiful surface, resembling onyx or natural marble. The cost of the material is high, the application technology is not easy, but the result is worth it.

Suitable styles are classic, antique or baroque. With the help of colors you can get different shades, including pearl shade or imitation of precious metal. Beautifully looks "Venetian" and as the basis for paintings, paintings and murals (for example, the popular pattern "butterfly", "shell" or the use of plant motifs).

The smooth surface is equally well suited for spacious and compact premises, with a limited number of square meters. The room will seem more spacious. And in a large apartment you get a truly palace interior.

The advantages of the decorative mixture

Like all building materials, decorative plaster has its strengths and weaknesses. The benefits include:

  • Practicality, long service life. If you correctly perform the application of materials on the wall and follow the rules of operation, the coating will serve you for a very long time. In addition, most modern materials are resistant to mechanical stress.
  • Elimination of wall defects. The use of textured material helps to hide the irregularities of the walls. The best option in this respect is a mixture with cellulose filler.
  • Versatility - the ability to use for different types of surfaces.
  • Resistance to external factors.
  • Environmental Safety. The wall covering does not contain toxic substances, has no unpleasant odors, does not absorb harmful components contained in the air. Most modern coatings "breathe" due to the porous structure. Putty is also a good sound insulation.
  • Many design options. You can decorate the walls according to your taste.

Of the minuses can be noted the high cost, the complexity of the application and dismantling.

Choice of putty

When choosing a putty take into account the following criteria:

  • Characteristics and purpose of the room.
  • Specificity of the surface.
  • "Issue price". This is true if financial opportunities are limited.

An important point - a kind of filler. In essence, it determines what the owner sees on the walls after the repair is completed. The greater the graininess of the filler, the bold is the pattern. One or another decorative effect depends on the method of application. Not every type of material is suitable for a particular technology.

Tools and application rules

Mixes for plastering surfaces are sold in different forms. It may be a dry mix. An aqueous solution of the mixture must be developed so that it does not lose its qualities. It is much more convenient to purchase a putty ready for use, which preserves its properties for a long time. For self-applied decorative textured plaster is particularly convenient. Experts say: to spoil such coverage, you need to really try. In addition, there is no need for too careful preparation of the walls. Textured mixture when putty itself perfectly smooths the defects.

Before coating the wall is cleaned from the old decor, close up the gap. This preparation is sufficient for bark beetle plaster. And, for example, the Venetian coating involves a much more thorough preparation, for example, alignment of the walls to a perfect state.

The required minimum of putty tools is as follows:

  • A set of spatulas.
  • Gladilka metal.
  • Grater made of plastic or wood.
  • Roller for plaster.
  • Capacity for water and ready solution.

Application methods and preparatory work

The method of preparation of the mixture is available on the package. To obtain a usable solution, compliance with the instructions is mandatory. It is equally important to correctly calculate the portion at a time. Otherwise, the mixture will harden in the tank. The prepared solution should be worked out as soon as possible. Putting decorative putty does not tolerate long interruptions in work. To obtain a unique surface, you can use a wavy or circular application, "rain", horizontal reliefs. With the use of a textured roller, embossing is simplified by several times. Particular attention should be paid to the joints of the sites so that there are no flows. After about 15-20 minutes. the surface is treated with a trowel. It will take about 24 hours for the plaster to fully set. Processing fine sandpaper will help eliminate all the excess decor.

Fur coat

This coating looks great inside and outside the house. To work you need the solution itself and pieces of polyethylene. For a more textured pattern using dense polyethylene. With thin polyethylene a smoother coating is obtained.

Apply the mixture to the wall. Too thorough preparation is not necessary, because the decor will hide small flaws. Now you can do the decor. Wash polyethylene and apply it to the wall to obtain the desired texture. For a smoother texture, apply a soft material to the wall, the area of which coincides with the floor.

Creative

This is an unusual and non-standard texture, which is almost impossible to repeat. Fold the paint roller with leather substitute so that chaotic folds cover it. After surface treatment, an unusual structure is obtained.

Bark beetle

To begin with, level the largest drops, then clean the surface. Next, apply a primer, preferably with quartz sand. Apply the plaster in small layers using a trowel. The directions of the trowel may be different depending on what kind of original pattern you want to get. The diagonal “ragged” pattern looks best. The ornament turns out at the expense of air under the tool.

Fish scales

This drawing is created with a spatula. Moreover, the wider it is, the larger the drawing will be. Apply the coating to a small area with a palm. Thickness of drawing about 4 mm. Starting at the corner, attach the spatula, pressing it into the uncured mixture. To make the picture look more beautiful, make it so that in all areas the pressing force is the same.

Independent production of a decorative mixture

It so happens that the options available in the store for some reason do not fit. You can make a mixture yourself, from scrap materials. This approach allows significant savings. However, it must be remembered that the quality and durability of the mixture prepared by itself is inferior to the factory-made product. But if you consider the relative cheapness of finishing materials, the period of 10-15 years is quite suitable. For the manufacture of decorative coating with their own hands is suitable ordinary putty on plaster or cement.

Here is the simplest cooking method:

  • Take the starting and finishing putty in equal proportions. Starting putty can be replaced with plaster plaster.
  • Pour the mixture into a bucket with lukewarm water.
  • Add a little diluted wallpaper glue to the finishing material. The mixture hardens somewhat slower, it can be used longer. In addition, it makes the wall unattractive for fungus and insects.
  • Stir the mixture with a construction mixer or with a drill with a nozzle.

Try to prepare for 1 time this amount of solution that you can produce in 15 minutes. It is even more efficient to work together: one is busy directly plastering the wall, the other is applying the pattern.

If you use this coating in the kitchen or bathroom, you need an additional coating of water-repellent varnish. There are master classes on the Internet.
For facade works suitable coating on the basis of cement mortar with the addition of a small amount of primer. In order for the resulting decor to retain an attractive appearance as long as possible, it is necessary not only to plaster the wall, but to cover it with facade paint. Finishing can be solid or in the form of panels.

The specific choice of coating for walls depends on the taste of the owner of the room and on the requirements for the result obtained. The budget is also of great importance, because the cost of different types of decorative putties differs by an order of magnitude. We must look at the complexity of the application. For example, only experienced plasters can cope with Venetian plaster, and it is quite simple to apply usual textured and structural mixtures. You can make a mixture with your own hands or use factory products, for example, Travertino or Bayramiks. Neighbors and guests will envy you!
